The Medication/Treatment Nurse is responsible for administration of all medications and treatments (except those specifically designated for an RN) during her tour of duty, according to the established medical and nursing care plan. Works under the direction of the Head/Charge Nurse to provide optimum nursing care to all residents on the unit.


  • Receives report from previous shift, making sure that he/she has received all pertinent information on each resident.
  • Organizes assignment for most efficient use of time.
  • Sets priorities in meeting the needs of residents.
  • Continuously evaluates behavior, symptoms, reactions and progress of residents and discusses findings with Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse.
  • Administers all medications according to established policies and procedures and physician's orders.
  • Performs all treatments according to physicians specific order and established policies and procedures.
  • Discusses the need to discontinue or change a medication of treatment with the Nurse Manager/ Charge Nurse.
  • Supervises, performs and/or assists with resident care as indicated: assists with feeding of residents.
  • Assists with orientation and instructions of other nursing personnel as required.
  • Takes and transcribes physician's orders accurately and promptly
  • Orders prescribed medications: notifies pharmacy of discontinued medications: and ensures accuracy of medications and dosages when received from pharmacy.
  • Assists with requisitions supplies and equipment as needed; ensures their proper utilization.
  • Documents all medications administered as indicated in established policy and procedures and according to the Department of Health regulations.
  • Helps to maintain all unit records against physician's orders to ensure accuracy before the first of each month.
  • Reviews medication administration records against physician's orders to ensure accuracy before the first of each month.
  • Reviews treatment records monthly.
  • Reports any medication error to Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse
  • When administering medications, is responsible to keep medications cart clean at all times, especially at end of the shift.
  • Maybe requested to accompany physicians on rounds.
  • May assist Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse in formulating and revising nursing care plans, and checks that nursing rehabilitation recommendations are carried out.
  • Maybe requested to assume full responsibility of the unit during the absence of Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse.
  • Will Review drug regimen report monthly, ensures that appropriate corrective measures are taken: and returns report to Nursing Office on a timely basis
  • Reports to work on time, alert and appropriately dressed during the entire tour of duty. Shall wear name pin during entire tour of duty. Complies with all established policies and procedures of the home and maintains the philosophy of care.
  • Effectively communicates with other members of the health care team.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to the needs of fellow workers, residents and families and provides reassurance and support as needed.
  • Reports and documents pertinent information and problems regarding any staff member on unit.
  • Maintains professionalism and discretion in other matters that maybe confided to her/him regarding residents and/ or staff members.
  • Supervises, directs or may assist with cleaning and care of equipment and supplies.
  • Reports malfunction and needed repairs to appropriate department.
  • Fosters personal growth journals, workshops and seminars.
  • Attends all mandatory inservice programs as scheduled and other programs as able.
  • Follows procedure established for the position in the Home's Fire and Safety Program and Participates in "Mock " fire drills.


  • Graduate of State approved school of Practical Nursing.

Experience Requirements

  • One or more years of experience in geriatric setting preferred.

License Requirements

  • Currently licensed or pending licensee as a Practical Nurse in the State of New York, BLS
