  • Overview

    Responsible for directing Nursing Service activities within the Home on the specific tour of duty, and for maintaining continuity for 24 hour nursing care. Implements administrative goals and policies and interprets objectives and plans of Nursing Services to the nurses on the units. Supervises total care given by the nurses and aides. Assumes responsibility of teaching nursing personnel when necessary. Evaluates emergencies, determines emergency measures to be used, and notifies appropriate persons and departments if deemed necessary. Assist in ensuring appropriate staffing is met during shift.


    • Tours the nursing units to ascertain the condition and needs of the residents on a daily basis
    • Informs Director and/or Assistant Director of Nursing of all pertinent changes in residents and special problems related to nursing care of the residents on a daily basis.
    • Observes nursing care of the residents to insure that orders are carried out as directed and treatment is administered in accordance with physician's instructions.
    • Investigates resident and employee job-related accidents and illnesses; insures that reports are complete and meaningful, placing particular emphasis on determination of cause and preventative measures.
    • Ascertains the need for additional or modified services on assigned nursing units.
    • In conjunction with inservice department, provides nursing care orientation for new employed nurses on assigned nursing units to job requirements, equipment, unit personnel, and residents. Responsible to see that nurses participate in the in-service education program.
    • Arranges hospital transfer of residents during non business hours.
    • Assists with clinical placement of nursing students from various educational programs and helps provide for positive learning experience.
    • May accompany physicians on rounds, assist him/her as necessary, receives instructions and notes on resident care requirement's.
    • May render nursing care, administer medication and perform treatments.
    • Prepares a written report for administration, Social Services and other departments on all critical or acutely ill resident with significant changes in general condition on a daily basis.
    • Periodically reviews resident care plans with staff nurses.
    • May share in preparing documents and maintains residents charts.
    • Provides for consultations with residents and/or families at times convenient for all parties to discuss problems, nursing care of residents and other relevant matters.
    • Serves as liaison between Nursing Staff and other departments.
    • Assists in planning, developing, organizing and implementing departmental goals and objectives.
    • Exhibits creatively and initiative in pursing organizational and departmental growth and development.
    • Assists in developing and/or revising department’s policies.
    • Exhibits creativity and initiative in pursuing organizational and departmental growth and development.
    • Ensure appropriate staffing levels are met for each unit by coordinating with Staffing Coordinator.
    • Submits appropriate reports as required.
    • Communicates effectively on all levels both orally and writing.
    • Maintains interdepartmental cooperation.
    • Insures all code and regulatory requirements are met , as appropriate.
    • Establishes standards and work procedures for the nursing staff in accordance with the established polices of the home.



    • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.

    Education Desired

    • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.

    Experience Requirements

    • Two years’ experience.
